NaNoWriMo On It’s Way…

National Novel Writing Month begins in a couple of weeks on November 1st. I’ve wanted to take part in this for a couple of years, but I’m going to have to pass once again due to a busy schedule. I just can’t fit in 1,000+ words a day right now.

But if you’re looking for a fun writing exercise, I think this is a great program. What you do is try to write a 50,000 word novel in the month of November. It doesn’t matter if it’s terrible. It just matters that you complete it. You’re supposed to start from scratch no sooner than November 1st and dive headlong into the story until you reach 50,000 words. The great thing about the program is that you are participating with hundreds of other writers, and you can log onto the website message board to share your experiences, ideas and hysteria.

What do you get if you finish the novel in 30 days? A certificate, as well as a NaNoWriMo “Winner” web icon. That and the satisfaction that you’ve just written the first draft of a novel. It might not be very good, but it actually very well could be. And even if it is terrible, it’s a first draft anyway.

So, if you want to sign up, go to www.nanowrimo.org. And good luck!
