The Children of Hurin by J.R.R. Tolkien Review
One of the best books that I have read in the past six months is The Children of Hurin by J.R.R. Tolkien and edited by Christopher Tolkien. The story is one of many that took place before the time of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Like all of Tolkien’s stories, it is masterfully written. It may be an extremely dark tale of individuals destined to doom, but the writing and the character development draw the reader into the story. You know that Turin and his sister cannot escape the curse of Morgoth, and the choices they make are drawing them closer to the curse. But you still can’t help but hope for them and root for them anyway. You know that a story has been written well when you still care about characters who cannot seem to make any right choices, who keep running themselves into hopeless situations.
Do not let the obvious dreariness turn you away from reading the book. It may be unlike most of Tolkien’s writings in that regard, but it still has that air of masterful genius. It is a must-read that I would put at the top of anyone’s list.
