This Week in Comics for November 29

I’m a little backed up on my comic book reading. I have a huge stack sitting on my desk, but I managed to get through a few that I picked up today as well as last week’s Angel.

angel.jpg I was excited to hear about an Angel comic which would start the story at the end of the TV series. So, after reading it, what did I think? It was enjoyable, but I think I was expecting something on the level of awesomeness that the Buffy Season 8 comics accomplished, and it doesn’t even compare. I could recommend Buffy to comic book readers who never watched the show, but I’m not sure if you would enjoy Angel without being a long-time fan. This isn’t to say I didn’t enjoy the comic. I did. I really like the opening to the story, and I think some interesting things could happen.

I’ve been eyeing the regular series of Gen 13 for a few weeks now. I was planning on picking up a trade at some point, but when I saw this in the store today, I thought I’d go ahead and read the new “Armageddon” series for it. After reading it, I’m definitely going to pick up the regular series trade on my next trip to the comic book store. I love the style of writing. It has a bit of a Runaways feel to it without actually seeming too much like Runaways. It isn’t that the storyline is similar because I didn’t find that it was. Something I like a lot about Runaways is the snappy dialogue and nerdy references, and Gen 13 also manages to capture this (”Looks like your base here belongs to us, Ladies”). Hee.

fromash.jpg I love zombies. What can I say. Army of Darkness is always a complete cheesefest, and “From the Ashes” is no different. Yet, I can’t help but read these comics and giggle at the hilarity of it all.

Silliest zombie line? “Eat your brains. Splay your spleen. Flay your fava beans.”

mz2.jpg Once again, I love zombies. This is the sequel series to the original Marvel Zombies comic book series by Robert Kirkman. Kirkman is writing this one as well, and his entertaining writing style is apparent in this comic. I enjoyed this one, probably on the same level of enjoyment as Angel. So far, my favorite zombie comic book series is “Walking Dead”. No contest.
I like the slight twist they’re doing with this. Some of the zombies are having a change of conscience and others are learning to control their hunger. It’s a bit different than the usual zombie formula. Well, there’s that and the fact that they’re superheros.

Score: 7.5 out of 10
