Ten Signs a Book is Written by Me

I’ve never done a meme, but I saw this one over at Amanda’s Writing Diary, and I thought it would be kinda fun. In creating this list, I actually realized some things about my writing that I did not know before, some of which I think needs changing.

So, without further ado, here are ten signs a book is written by me:

1. It is written in first person female. I can’t help it. It’s just how the story naturally comes out when I start typing. I’d like to try third person, but I’m afraid I would keep morphing it back to first person.

2. There is a male character named Michael. I keep doing this, and I have no idea why.

3. Something cheesy is said or done. I usually write these scenes or dialogue by snickering loudly.

4. No one has read it but me. So far, none of my partially completed novels has been read by anyone. This is something that I would like to change, but first I need to get something written that I feel confident enough about to share.

5. The female protagonist is in her mid-20s. Ah, but I’m not sure I can say that now that I have started a fantasy novel about a 17 year old.

6. I sneak a vampire or zombie or werewolf reference in there somehow.

7. There’s a crazy cat lady. I’m not sure how this one has happened, but so far, every book I’ve worked on has ended up having a crazy cat lady in it. I hope that isn’t my subconscious telling me that I’m a crazy cat lady. Cats? Check. A little crazy? Check.

8. Something mysterious happens. Whether it’s your classic murder mystery or something supernatural, I love the intrigue.

9. There’s not only a crazy cat lady, but there are usually cats. Okay, there are always cats and not just the ones that belong to the crazy cat lady. The more I talk about this cat craze, the more I think my cats are taking over my brain.

10. It’s not finished. I’m working on being able to remove this last one from the list.

So, what have I learned from this exercise?

- I need to stop putting cats and crazy cat ladies into my stories.

- I need to let others read my work in progress and listen to their critiques.

- I need to finish a novel.

- I really need to stop putting cats into my stories.

I think I’m supposed to tag people whenever I do one of these memes, but I’m going to pass. If anyone else decides to do this one, I’d love to read it. Just let me know and I’ll stop by your blog to check it out.

It has inspired me to do my own!

  2. I like this meme. I’ll do it sometime in the future. In a week or so. I’ll let you know when.

And my advice remedy #4 as soon as you get the chance. Jump on in, the water is fine.
