Conferences, Conferences, Conferences

April is going to be a big month for me. If you’ve never noticed the tagline in my header above, it says:

Aspiring Writer, Internet Addict, Undeniable Nerd

Well, next month, I have three conferences lined up, and each one of them applies to a different part of me. It’s pretty exciting, and I’m looking forward to all three of them.

banner.gifWriterly: The 4th Annual New York Round Table Writers’ Conference. This will be my very first writers’ conference. I’m a combination of slightly nervous, excited and scattered. I’m not exactly sure what to expect, but from what I’ve read online, writers’ conferences are great experiences for both published and unpublished authors, depending on the type of conference it is. There are going to be several workshops that I’m interested in attending, such as Birth of a Book, Querial Killers: How Not to Get an Agent, Writing Process Q&A and Novel Writing.

There will be agents there from Writers House, Dystel & Goderich, FinePrint and more. There will be editors from Random House, Simon & Schuster, McGraw-Hill and more. I do not personally plan on pitching anything since my manuscript is not even close to being completed. However, I think this will be a great way to learn about the industry, meet some fellow writers and make some great contacts. If any of you readers out there has ever been to a writers’ conference and has any pointers to share, I’d love to hear them.

Webby: PodCamp NYC 2.0. This is a free conference in April, co-founded by Chris Brogan, that focuses on new media such as blogging, vlogging, podcasts and more. You can go just to participate in the event or you can sign up to speak on a new media subject. There will be lots of panels on podcasting, social networking, Twitter, blogging, video creation and more. Should be nice and internet geeky.

Nerdy: New York Comic Con 2008. If this doesn’t fulfill my nerd quotient for the year, I don’t know what will. I have always wanted to go to this thing, so I went ahead and bought a ticket. How could I miss something that is going to have Stan Lee, Orson Scott Card, Guillermo Del Toro, Neil Gaiman, Seth Green, Frank Miller and Terry Brooks all in the same place?!? Yes, I love Seth Green. And no, I’m not dressing up.

So, as you can see, I have full weekends during the month of April. That means I need to use the next couple of weekends wisely and get some major writing done. My status bar seems stuck in the 4k range.
