YA Book Recommendations

Since I’ve gotten all into the YA writing world this year, I wanted to post some of my own favorite YA novels I’ve read. I’m going to post this as a tab up on top of the header as well and add to this as I go along.

I thought since this is the genre I write and the genre I’ve been reading the most of lately, it’d be fun to list the ones I particularly love.

This isn’t a comprehensive list, but these are definitely some of my top picks.

In no particular order…

1. The Uglies Series by Scott Westerfield - Love, love, love, love, love!

2. Peeps by Scott Westerfield - Cool take on the vampire myths.

3. Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr - Cool urban faerie tale.

4. Gemma Doyle Trilogy by Libba Bray - Seriously, one of the best things I’ve ever read. Takes place in the late 19th century with lots of magic and mythological creatures.

5. His Dark Materials by Pullman - This trilogy blew me away. If you’ve only seen the movie, do yourself a favor and read the books. They can’t even compare.

6. City of Bones and City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare - Love this! Urban demon fighters in NYC.

7. Tithe Series by Holly Black - I met her at ComicCon, and she is terrific. Another urban faerie tale. Quite dark and compelling.

8. Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead - More vampires!

9. Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer - Truly a page-turning vampire/human love story. Enjoyed all three of these very much. The fourth left something to be desired.

10. I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith - An oldie and not a fantasy but one of the best books I’ve read this year.

11. Wake by Lisa McMann - Terrific and creepy.

12. Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling (of course) - Couldn’t leave this one out as it is in my top favorite series of all time.

13. The Hobbit by Tolkien - An oldie, written for younger than YA, but still appreciated by all. Fell in love with this years and years ago after I got over the whole Gollum nightmare thing.

Well, there’s the short list. It’ll grow and be available here in the future.

Comments

I’ve already added a bunch of these to my “must read” list. Either I’m going to have to learn how to read faster, or you’re going to have to stop recommending good books.
